FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - GIVE KIDS A LIFT
Here are some of the frequently asked questions we receive regarding the Give Kids A Lift Program.
Q: What benefits does the Give Kids a Lift! program provide?
A: After-school transportation for the dependent children of CalWORKs participants to home, day care, homework center or other after-school destination. Appropriate car safety-seats are provided for your children. Transportation is provided on school days only. Service is not available during school breaks, summer vacation or on holidays.

Q: Who is eligible for Give Kids a Lift! services?
A: (Please note that Give Kids a Lift! services are very limited and that applications for benefits far exceed the program’s ability to provide services.) Currently qualified Santa Clara County CalWORKs participants in good standing and those former CalWORKs participants eligible to receive Post Aid Services. Participants must demonstrate the need for Give Kids a Lift! services and periodic recertification of a household’s eligibility for services will be conducted during the school year.
Eligibility for Give Kids a Lift! program services is limited to two full, or partial, school years of benefits. Households are required to qualify for program services each year and enrollment in the prior year’s program is no guarantee that a household will be selected as participants in any subsequent school year. A small number of openings are available for low-income individuals who are trying to enter or re-enter the work force. Low-income is defined as a household income that does not exceed 150% of the Federal Poverty Income Standards. Please contact Give Kids a Lift! for specific low-income eligibility requirements.

Q: How are children/families selected to participate in the program?
A: Once families have been determined to be eligible for Give Kids a Lift! services, staff considers pickup locations, destination locations, pickup times and the number of children traveling from a pickup location to the same destination in order to select participants for the program. An additional consideration is whether a child requires assistance every day or only on certain days of the week.
While the program makes every effort to provide service throughout the county, because of the limited number of routes that are operated by the program and the fact that many children are excused from school at the same time, requires that pickup locations (schools) for students be near one another to ensure that children do not have to wait long to be picked up. As noted earlier, prior enrollment in the program does not ensure that Give Kids a Lift! services will be continued for your children.

Q: How do I apply for Give Kids a Lift!?
A: Complete an application and provide confirmation of your CalWORKs status by an Eligibility Worker or other CalWORKs staff. Applicants attempting to qualify under low-income eligibility standards must provide third-party documentation of their household’s income. Please contact the program for more details.
